Synopsis
I'll Be Gone in the Dark (2020) is HBO's true-crime documentary series, available to watch online on iFILM. It follows writer Michelle McNamara and the years she spent, mostly alone, chasing a California predator who broke into homes after dark back in the 1970s.
For decades nobody could name him. He shifted his methods from break-ins to assaults to murder, and police across separate counties were slow to connect the cases. McNamara dug through message boards and old case files, traded theories with retired detectives, and gave the man the nickname that finally stuck — the Golden State Killer. The six episodes grew out of her book of the same name, finished by collaborators after she died suddenly mid-project.
Director Liz Garbus keeps the focus off the gore and on the obsession — and on victims who went unheard for years. The story landed just as a former police officer, Joseph DeAngelo, was actually arrested, yet the series matters most for how one woman refused to let a cold case rot in a filing cabinet. A heavy, humane watch for anyone who values empathy over shock. Stream I'll Be Gone in the Dark online on iFILM.
