Synopsis
The Bélier Family (La Famille Bélier, 2014) is a French musical comedy-drama directed by Éric Lartigau — watch it online on iFILM. The Béliers are a farming family in rural France, and every member is deaf except sixteen-year-old Paula, who has spent her whole life as their interpreter: at the market, at the doctor's office, during her father's unlikely run for local office.
When her music teacher hears Paula sing and pushes her to audition for a prestigious Radio France program in Paris, she faces a real problem. Winning means leaving. Leaving means her family loses the only ears they have. Louane Emera, in her debut role, carries the film with a rawness that feels completely unforced — there is nothing calculated about her performance.
