Synopsis
Les Galettes de Pont-Aven (1975) is a French tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. Henri Serin sells umbrellas across the provinces and paints female nudes on the side. At home a pious wife and indifferent children wait for him, and he has long stopped pretending he wants to be there.
Henri's escape comes on the road: small affairs, sketches, plenty of wine. One day he simply walks away from it all and lands in Pont-Aven, the Breton village where Gauguin once worked. There he befriends Émile, a local painter chasing Gauguin's shadow, and the two share their drinking and their weakness for women. Jean-Pierre Marielle plays this aging runaway with a sad, deadpan wit.
Director Joël Séria made a loose, bawdy fable about fleeing the respectable life, and over the years it quietly turned into a French cult favorite. The cast includes Claude Piéplu, Andréa Ferréol and Dominique Lavanant. One for fans of 1970s French auteur cinema and late-in-life rebellion. Stream Les Galettes de Pont-Aven online on iFILM.
