Synopsis
Restrepo (2010) is a war documentary you can watch online on iFILM, shot by journalists Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger during a full year embedded with a U.S. Army platoon in the Korengal Valley — the stretch of eastern Afghanistan that cost more American lives per square mile than almost anywhere else in the conflict.
There is no narration steering the viewer's opinion. Instead, the camera stays with the men as they build a small outpost, survive ambushes, negotiate cattle deals with village elders, and grieve the friends they keep losing. The outpost is named after Pfc. Juan "Doc" Restrepo, who died early in the deployment. His absence shapes everything that follows.
The film took the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Hetherington was killed in Libya the following year, making Restrepo part of his final body of work. Stream Restrepo (2010) online on iFILM — as close to an unmediated look at combat as cinema gets.
