Synopsis
The Wild Blue Yonder (2005) is Werner Herzog's science-fiction mockumentary, free to watch online on iFILM. An alien from a dead planet, played by Brad Dourif, stands among derelict buildings and explains how his people came to Earth and failed to settle here.
Meanwhile human astronauts drift through space, hunting for a new home for mankind. Herzog skips special effects entirely. Instead he edits together genuine NASA shuttle footage and dives shot beneath the Antarctic ice, then passes them off as an alien ocean. The result is less a plot than a hypnotic collage: Dourif's rambling voice, a score of cello and throat singing, bodies floating in zero gravity and under the ice.
Call it a sci-fi fantasy in the purest sense, an essay-film rather than an adventure. Herzog devotees who can sit with 81 minutes of contemplation and no action will find a strange beauty here; viewers after a proper space thriller will struggle.
