Synopsis
MirrorMask (2005) is a fantasy film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Dave McKean from a screenplay by Neil Gaiman, produced by the Jim Henson Company. Fifteen-year-old Helena (Stephanie Leonidas) has grown up performing in her family's circus and wants out. Then her mother collapses, and the guilt of their last argument follows Helena into sleep — and into a world built entirely from her own drawings.
The White Queen is dying, and the only thing that can save her is the MirrorMask, an object Helena has never heard of. Her guide is a juggler named Valentine (Jason Barry), whose loyalty shifts with the wind; along the way she runs into sphinxes voiced by Stephen Fry and a shadow version of herself living the ordinary life she always wanted. McKean constructed every visual by hand — the CGI environments grew from his own artwork, which gives each frame the texture of a painting rather than a polished effects reel.
Made for four million dollars, MirrorMask is the rare fantasy where budget constraints became the creative engine. Gaiman's script keeps it from going soft: beneath the invented creatures and shifting geography is a story about guilt, growing up, and what it costs to wish your life were different.
