Synopsis
Watch "Mikey and Nicky" (1976) online on iFILM — Elaine May's raw, slow-burning crime film with Peter Falk and John Cassavetes as two small-time Chicago gangsters whose friendship has been corroding for decades.
Nicky has locked himself in a run-down hotel room, convinced the mob boss has put a contract on him. He calls Mikey, his oldest friend. What follows is one long night of wandering the city together — arguing, drinking, confessing things that probably shouldn't be confessed. The film was largely improvised, shot with multiple cameras and an enormous amount of raw footage that May spent years editing down. It plays less like a thriller and more like a John Cassavetes picture: two men in a room, and the terrible question of how well you can ever really know someone. A genuinely undervalued film that rewards patience.
