Synopsis
To the Devil a Daughter (1976) is a British-West German horror film you can watch online on iFILM. It's the final gothic chiller from Hammer studio, adapted from Dennis Wheatley's novel and directed by Peter Sykes.
American occult writer John Verney gets pulled in to protect Catherine, a young nun raised by a breakaway sect. Their leader, a defrocked priest named Father Michael, has groomed her for a single purpose: on her eighteenth birthday she is meant to become the Devil's vessel on Earth. Verney hides the girl, but the ritual is already in motion and distance does nothing to stop it. Richard Widmark anchors the film as Verney, Christopher Lee makes a chillingly calm villain in a cassock, and a teenage Nastassja Kinski takes one of her earliest screen roles.
The movie shut the door on Hammer's horror era, and its reputation rests on a heavy, slow-burning dread plus an ending the producers patched together in a hurry. If you like the satanic thrillers that ran alongside The Exorcist and The Omen, this one belongs on the list. Stream To the Devil a Daughter (1976) online on iFILM.
