Synopsis
The Great Battle (안시성, 2018) is a Korean historical war film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Kim Kwang-sik. In 645 AD, Emperor Taizong of Tang leads an army numbering in the hundreds of thousands into Goguryeo — ancient Korea — and takes fortress after fortress on the road to the capital.
Standing in the way is the garrison at Ansi, commanded by General Yang Man-chu, played by Bae Sung-woo. They are outnumbered by an order of magnitude. The film follows the 88-day siege: siege towers, fire attacks, tunnel warfare and a commander who has no intention of surrendering. Jo In-sung leads the cast. The production was one of the larger Korean blockbuster budgets of its year.
The film doesn't reach for allegory — it commits to the siege itself as spectacle, and delivers it at scale.
