Synopsis
The Fortress (남한산성, 2017) is a South Korean historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. In the winter of 1636 a Qing army sweeps into Joseon, and King Injo retreats with his court behind the stone walls of a mountain stronghold near present-day Seoul.
Outside the gates sit the invading horde and a brutal cold. Inside, thirteen thousand soldiers, warrior-monks and frightened officials watch their food run out. The court splits in two. Minister Choi Myung-kil (Lee Byung-hun) argues for surrender to keep the people alive; his rival Kim Sang-hun (Kim Yun-seok) insists they fight to the last man, honor before everything. Six weeks of siege turn that argument into a matter of who eats and who starves, and every word spoken in the king's council cuts deeper than a blade.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk — yes, the man who later made Squid Game — shoots it slow and severe: frozen ridgelines, hushed debates, almost no battlefield spectacle. This is a film about the price of a decision when no choice leads anywhere good. Stream The Fortress (2017) online on iFILM.
