Synopsis
A Generation (Pokolenie, 1955) — watch online on iFILM. This is Andrzej Wajda's first feature, the opening chapter of the informal war trilogy he would complete with Kanal and Ashes and Diamonds.
Stach is a Warsaw teenager scraping by on the city's outskirts when Nazi occupation pushes him toward a choice. Work at a carpenter's shop introduces him to Communist resistance organizers, and soon he is taking on missions he wasn't prepared for. Two names now prominent in film history appear in the cast: Zbigniew Cybulski and a twenty-year-old Roman Polanski.
Wajda shot the film at twenty-nine. The result is an unsentimental account of a generation that grew up inside a war they didn't start — and paid fully for it. Stream A Generation online on iFILM.
