Synopsis
Anna and the Wolves (1973) is a Spanish drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Carlos Saura with Geraldine Chaplin in the lead. A young foreign governess named Anna takes a job at a country estate near Madrid, and finds a household with three middle-aged brothers whose fixations run very dark.
José is absorbed in religious self-punishment. Fernando runs his life like a military operation. Juan sends anonymous letters, and they keep arriving closer. Anna is the one outsider in a closed system, and the film doesn't offer her an easy exit.
Saura made this while Franco was still alive, and Spanish audiences read the three brothers without any help from the director: the Church, the Army, and patriarchal repression. Chaplin, who was Saura's companion at the time, plays Anna as someone who understands exactly what she's dealing with — and can't do much about it.
