Synopsis
A Swedish Love Story (En kärlekshistoria, 1970) is Roy Andersson's debut feature, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Two fifteen-year-olds, Pär and Annika, fall for each other somewhere between a garage, a dance hall and a summer-cabin suburb outside Stockholm.
He fixes mopeds part-time and rides one everywhere; she paints her lips and waits. Both are too shy to speak first, so they chain-smoke and circle each other instead. Andersson films their tenderness with near-documentary patience while the adults hover in the background — tired, drinking, long past the feeling the kids are only beginning to find.
The future director of Songs from the Second Floor is warm and lyrical here, years before his deadpan gloom set in, though the long takes and exact framing are already his. The film took prizes at the Berlin Film Festival and still ranks among the truest movies ever made about teenage love. Look for a young Björn Andrésen in a small role, a year before Death in Venice.
