Synopsis
They Fought for Their Motherland (1975) — watch online on iFILM, Sergei Bondarchuk's adaptation of Mikhail Sholokhov's novel about the Soviet rearguard retreat of July 1942.
The regiment has been bled dry. Near Stalingrad, what's left of a rifle unit marches back through scorched steppe — no ammunition, no sleep, no certainty of a tomorrow. Bondarchuk stays at ground level: ordinary soldiers, not poster heroes. Pyotr Lopakhin (Vasily Shukshin), Nikolai Streltsov (Vyacheslav Tikhonov), and their platoon argue, crack jokes, and pull each other along. Yuri Nikulin, Nonna Mordyukova, and Innokenty Smoktunovsky round out one of the strongest Soviet casts of the era.
Shukshin died on set during production in 1974 — the film became his final screen appearance. At 151 minutes it moves deliberately, which is the point: war here is exhaustion and endurance, not spectacle. Stream They Fought for Their Motherland (1975) online on iFILM.
