Synopsis
The Silent Revolution (Das schweigende Klassenzimmer, 2018) is a German historical drama available to watch online on iFILM, directed by Lars Kraume and drawn from the true story of a graduating class in East Germany.
It's October 1956. Two teenagers from Stalinstadt slip across to West Berlin, catch a newsreel showing Soviet tanks rolling through Budapest, and come back changed. Back in school, their class votes to observe a minute of silence for the Hungarian dead. That single act — wordless, barely a minute long — sets off a chain reaction: the Stasi wants a name, the principal is under pressure, and twenty young people suddenly have to decide whether to give up one of their own or lose everything they've worked toward.
Kraume keeps the film tightly focused on the students rather than on the machinery of the state, which makes the political stakes land harder. Leonard Scheicher and Tom Gramenz are both strong in the leads. The film won the German Film Prize for Best Screenplay in 2018. Stream The Silent Revolution online on iFILM.
