Synopsis
The Dark House (Dom zły, 2009) is a Polish crime thriller to watch online on iFILM, directed by Wojtek Smarzowski. On a freezing night, traveling zootechnician Edward Srodon stumbles onto the Dziabas family farm in the remote Bieszczady Mountains — and the visit ends in slaughter.
The film cuts between two timelines. In the autumn of 1978 there is vodka, a drunken pact between strangers, and a slow drift toward catastrophe inside a dim peasant cottage. Years later, during Martial Law, a People's Militia team led by Lieutenant Mróz arrives to reconstruct what happened. The deeper they dig, the muddier it gets — the rot isn't only in that farmhouse, it's in the investigators too. Arkadiusz Jakubik, Marian Dziędziel and Robert Więckiewicz keep the dread coiled tight.
Smarzowski paints late communist Poland with no varnish: booze, fear, informers and a code of mutual cover-up that passes for survival. Cold, brutal and uncomfortably honest, it's a treat for anyone who loves Eastern European noir. Stream The Dark House (2009) online on iFILM.
