About

Synopsis

The Spy Gone North (2018) is a South Korean espionage thriller from director Yoon Jong-bin, available to watch online on iFILM. It's the mid-1990s, the Cold War's dying embers, and an intelligence officer code-named Black Venus reinvents himself as a businessman bound for Beijing.

His mission: get close to North Korean officials and learn how far the regime has come toward building a nuclear weapon. To earn their trust, agent Park (Hwang Jung-min) spends years playing a wheeler-dealer pitching ad shoots to be filmed in the North, slowly bonding with a powerful party man (Lee Sung-min). One wrong word would expose him on both sides of the border.

Yoon stages almost none of this with gunfire. The tension lives in glances, silences and the exact words chosen across a negotiating table. Drawn from a real operation and premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, it's a patient, brainy spy film for viewers who prize intrigue over action. Stream The Spy Gone North online on iFILM.
