Synopsis
King Size (Kingsajz, 1988) is a cult Polish comedy from Juliusz Machulski you can watch online on iFILM. Hidden among the shelves of a library cellar lies Shuflandia, a tiny realm of dwarves who dream of one thing: reaching the world of the "giants" above. The only way up is a potion called kingsize, which stretches them to full human height.
The formula is locked away by the petty bosses who run the place, led by the gluttonous Big Eater, and only the most obedient ever get to grow. Young Olo, who escaped to the giants long ago, teams up with his friends to steal the recipe and free all of Shuflandia at once. Jerzy Stuhr, Jacek Chmielnik and Katarzyna Figura clearly relish the chaos.
Wrapped in a fairy tale about dwarves, Machulski smuggled in a sharp satire of late communist Poland: the bureaucracy, the queues, the longing for freedom, and the absurdity of a system where you're allowed to grow only by permit. The film has been quoted to death and stands as a classic of Polish cinema. It's a treat for anyone who likes smart retro humor with a hidden edge. Stream King Size (1988) online on iFILM.
