Attila

At nearly three hours, the film traces Attila's rise from a contest of tribal succession to full-scale war against a weakening Roman Empire. Butler, years before 300 made him a known quantity, brings enough physical presence here to make Attila read as someone who actually convinced armies to follow him. Powers Boothe plays Aetius as a man who understands exactly how far Rome has fallen and fights regardless. The production is TV-scale, but the two lead performances pull more weight than the budget would suggest. Alice Krige and Tommy Flanagan round out a solid supporting cast.
