Synopsis

The remnants of the French royalist army have been sheltering in England, and the Royal Navy draws the short straw: land them back on Norman soil and hope a counter-revolution takes hold. Hornblower can see the operation is shaky before it starts — the royalists are fractious, Antony Sher's Comte de Charette has his own agenda, and the republican defenders show no interest in an orderly welcome.
