Synopsis
Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge (1924) is Fritz Lang's silent epic, free to watch online on iFILM. It closes the two-part saga drawn from the medieval German poem the Nibelungenlied. Pure German silent cinema at the height of its ambition.
Siegfried is dead, and Kriemhild (Margarete Schön) has narrowed her whole life down to a single purpose: payback. She marries Etzel, king of the Huns, then lures her brother Gunther and the Burgundian court into his realm. The welcome is a trap. A banquet inside the Hun fortress collapses into siege and slaughter, and almost no one walks out. Lang composes like an architect — vast sets, frozen crowds, ornament where you expect emotion. Revenge rendered as cold geometry rather than melodrama.
Made five years before Metropolis, with the same director and screenwriter Thea von Harbou, the film shaped a century of visual storytelling, echoing through everything from chivalric cinema to The Lord of the Rings. One for viewers who love silent classics and don't mind their unhurried, stony rhythm. Stream Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge (1924) online on iFILM.
