Synopsis
Assembly (集结号, 2007) is a Chinese war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Feng Xiaogang adapted it from the novella "The Lawsuit," itself rooted in the true story of a soldier who fought to have his fallen comrades recognized as heroes instead of men who simply vanished.
The setting is the winter of 1948, a hinge moment in the civil war between the Communists and the Kuomintang. Captain Gu Zidi, played by Zhang Hanyu, is ordered to hold a position by an abandoned mine with his Ninth Company until they hear the bugle call to retreat. That call never comes. Almost the entire company is wiped out and Gu alone walks away — only to learn the army has filed his forty-six men as "missing," with no graves, no names, no pensions for their families.
The film's second half isn't combat at all. It's one stubborn man's grinding war against paperwork and indifference to give the dead their names back. The battle sequences hit hard, shot in the gritty key of Saving Private Ryan, but the heart of the picture lies in the silence afterward. Its tagline puts it plainly: every sacrifice deserves to be immortalized. Stream Assembly (2007) online on iFILM.
