Synopsis
The Harvey Girls (1946) is an MGM Technicolor musical Western you can watch online on iFILM, directed by George Sidney and starring Judy Garland at the height of her studio-era popularity.
Susan Bradley boards a train west expecting a mail-order husband. He turns out to be nothing like his letters — and she's stranded in a rough Arizona railroad town. A crew of Harvey House waitresses offers her a job and a new life. Ranged against them is the saloon owner (John Hodiak), who has his own ideas about how the town should run. Ray Bolger and a young Angela Lansbury round out the cast, with Cyd Charisse in an early screen appearance.
The showstopper "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Song. What lifts the film above a standard MGM showcase is the actual tension between order and frontier lawlessness — it gives the singing and dancing something to be about.
