Synopsis
Violent Summer (Estate violenta, 1959) — watch online on iFILM. Directed by Valerio Zurlini, this Italian-French war drama stars a young Jean-Louis Trintignant alongside Eleonora Rossi Drago. The setting is Riccione, an Adriatic resort town in the summer of 1943: the wealthy are still there, still maintaining the fiction that the war is someone else's problem.
Carlo is the son of a senior fascist official — young, draft-dodging, adrift. He falls for Roberta, an older war widow with a child, despite her mother's opposition and the town's quiet disapproval. Then the radio announces that Mussolini's government has collapsed. The world they built their romance inside ceases to exist by nightfall, and Carlo faces a choice he has spent years avoiding.
Zurlini isn't making a war film — he is showing how war dismantles private life one ordinary afternoon at a time. Trintignant was barely twenty-nine, and his bewilderment reads as real rather than performed. A quietly devastating Italian melodrama from the same moment as Antonioni's early masterworks, and just as precise in what it withholds. Stream Violent Summer (1959) online on iFILM.
