Synopsis
Rommel (2012) is a German biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Niki Stein with Ulrich Tukur in the title role. The film picks up in January 1944, when Field Marshal Erwin Rommel takes command of Army Group B in northern France and sets about turning the Atlantic Wall into something worth defending.
Tukur plays him as a pragmatist trapped between loyalty and clarity: he knows the war is unwinnable but hasn't found a way to act on that knowledge. A strategic standoff with Field Marshal von Rundstedt left the German defense uncoordinated; the Allies landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944 and found the seams. The second half follows the July 20 assassination plot, the tightening net of suspicion, and the choice Berlin ultimately put to Rommel on his own terms.
Produced for German public broadcaster ARD, the film gives Tukur room to make Rommel human without excusing him. Stream Rommel online on iFILM.
