Synopsis
The Night of the Generals (1967) is a wartime detective thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Anatole Litvak and starring Peter O'Toole opposite Omar Sharif. Warsaw, 1942: a woman is found murdered in the occupied city. German intelligence officer Major Grau traces the crime to three Wehrmacht generals — suspects with rank, resources, and no obvious reason to cooperate.
The investigation is shut down. The generals rotate to Paris, where an identical murder surfaces. Grau keeps going, without backing and increasingly without protection. Alongside the killings, a faction of officers is quietly plotting against Hitler, and the murderer may be someone already playing both sides.
Adapted from Hans Hellmut Kirst's novel and jointly produced by France and the UK, the film runs 148 minutes across two decades, closing the case in Hamburg in 1962. Tom Courtenay, Donald Pleasence and Christopher Plummer fill out a sharp ensemble around O'Toole's angular, driven performance. A rewarding pick if you like historical crime where the detective is outranked by every suspect he names. Stream The Night of the Generals on iFILM.
