Synopsis
The Needle (Igla, 1989) is Rashid Nugmanov's drama-thriller, worth a watch online on iFILM if only for rock legend Viktor Tsoi in the lead. Moro comes back to Alma-Ata to collect an old debt, drops in on his ex-girlfriend Dina, and realises she has slipped into morphine addiction.
He takes her out to the drying Aral Sea, far from the city and the people who hooked her. By the water Dina starts to recover. Back in town it all unravels again: behind the supply chain sits a smooth doctor-dealer played by Pyotr Mamonov, with petty hangers-on like Aleksandr Bashirov's character circling. So Moro decides to deal with the drug ring himself, on his own terms.
Shot at Kazakhfilm, the picture doubles as a snapshot of the late Soviet years — empty courtyards, Kino songs, that closing walk set to "Gruppa Krovi."
