Synopsis
Tony Takitani (2004) is a Japanese drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Jun Ichikawa from a Haruki Murakami short story, it follows a man who spent his whole life alone and assumed that was simply how things were.
Tony is a withdrawn technical illustrator, fluent in precise drawings and helpless with people. Then he meets a young woman who carries one quiet compulsion: she cannot stop buying clothes. Rooms fill with dresses. A gentle marriage slides into dependency, then into a loss Tony tries to make sense of by sitting among the wardrobe she left behind.
Issey Ogata plays both father and son, Rie Miyazawa plays two women, and the camera drifts sideways as if turning the pages of a book. Ryuichi Sakamoto's fragile score makes the 77 minutes feel like a story read in a single sitting. Best suited to viewers who like their films slow and hushed.
