Onyx Equinox (2020) is an animated fantasy series set in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica — watch it online on iFILM. A teenage Aztec boy named Izel is dragged back from the edge of death by the gods, who hand him one task: seal five gates to the underworld before humanity collapses.

The wrinkle is that Izel doesn't particularly want to save anyone. Forced heroism on a kid who feels nothing for the people around him is a sharper angle than the genre usually picks, and the show commits to that tension across its episodes.
