Synopsis
The Speech (Le Discours, 2020) is a French comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Laurent Tirard and starring Benjamin Lavernhe. Eighty-four minutes, one family dinner that refuses to end, and one wedding toast that the lead character will do anything to avoid writing.
Adrien is 35, neurotic, quietly convinced that marriage is a bad idea, and his girlfriend has gone silent on him mid-text. Then his brother-in-law — a man he considers catastrophically uninteresting — asks him to write the speech for the wedding. The whole film takes place at the dinner table. Adrien sits surrounded by relatives, stares at his phone, rehearses arguments in his head and composes increasingly desperate messages to a woman who isn't replying.
Tirard keeps everything inside the character's skull, and that's where the comedy lives. No set pieces, no romantic detours — just the gap between what Adrien is thinking and what he manages to say out loud. It's a film that works best if you've ever survived a family meal while quietly falling apart. Stream The Speech (2020) online on iFILM.
