Synopsis
The Accountant of Auschwitz (2018) is a Canadian documentary you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Matthew Shoychet. In 2015, a 94-year-old former SS man named Oskar Gröning stood trial in Germany. He answered for the deaths of 300,000 people — as an accessory, not a triggerman.
Gröning's role at Auschwitz was administrative: he logged the valuables stripped from arrivals on the platform before they were herded toward the gas chambers. His defence held to a single distinction — he counted money, not bodies. The trial was the first to test whether that distance from the killing met the threshold for criminal liability under German law.
