Synopsis
One Nation, One King (Un peuple et son roi, 2018) is a French historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Pierre Schoeller traces the early revolution through ordinary Parisians — washerwomen, glassblowers, market sellers — who suddenly find their lives tangled up in the fate of a kingdom.
In cramped workshops and the public galleries of the newly born National Assembly, these people hear themselves called "citizen" for the first time. Among them are the glassblower Basile (Gaspard Ulliel) and the laundress Françoise (Adèle Haenel), whose love deepens as the old order falls apart around them. Deputies argue themselves hoarse over what to do with the king, and every vote nudges the country toward a reckoning that both the street and the throne will pay for. The deep ensemble includes Louis Garrel, Laurent Lafitte, Denis Lavant and Olivier Gourmet.
Schoeller skips the usual parade of famous names and views the years from 1789 to 1793 from below, out of the crowd. The lighting feels almost Dutch-old-master — faces in half-dark, candle flame, the texture of working hands. This is for viewers who want a lived-in sense of what it felt like to stand inside the break between two eras, not a textbook. Stream One Nation, One King (2018) online on iFILM.
