Synopsis
Black Girl (La Noire de..., 1966) is Ousmane Sembène's landmark drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A young Senegalese woman named Diouana follows her French employers to the Riviera, hoping for a better life.
Back in Dakar she minded their children and pictured France as freedom. In a cramped flat near Antibes the work only grows — cooking, cleaning, serving guests in silence. Her employer treats her as property, the door to the outside seems shut, and her one tie to home is a mask she carried from Senegal. Mbissine Thérèse Diop plays Diouana almost wordlessly, her thoughts carried by voiceover, and it lands hard.
Often called the first feature directed by a sub-Saharan African filmmaker, the film runs barely an hour and reset the course of African cinema. Sembène, once a dockworker in Marseille himself, addresses colonialism through chores, glances and quiet rather than speeches. Difficult, essential viewing for anyone after a conversation, not a distraction. Stream Black Girl (1966) online on iFILM.
