Dead Mountain: The Dyatlov Pass Incident (Season 1)
Synopsis
Dead Mountain: The Dyatlov Pass Incident (Pereval Dyatlova, 2020) is a Russian mystery series you can watch online on iFILM. It builds on the darkest puzzle in Soviet hiking lore: nine students set off across the Ural peaks in February 1959 and never came back. They were found dead near a tent slashed open from the inside, and no one has ever explained why.
The show runs on two braided timelines. One follows the fictional KGB major Oleg Kostin (Pyotr Fyodorov), a haunted war veteran with an uncanny instinct for death, sent to make sense of what happened on the slope of Kholat Syakhl. The other replays the trek of Igor Dyatlov's group, shot in grainy black-and-white film stock — the kids are alive, joking, falling in love, suspecting nothing. Avalanche, escaped convicts, secret military tests, something beyond explanation: every theory the investigation lines up cracks against a detail it can't hold.
Producers Valery Fedorovich and Evgeny Nikishov steer the project, while documentary director Pavel Kostomarov shot the retro thread, giving the winter of 1959 an almost tactile texture. Eight episodes that grip through dread and the unsaid rather than cheap scares. Best for viewers who like a cold detective story laced with the uncanny — and a true case that has no closing answer.
