Channing Pollock plays Judex as a stage magician brought to life: cloaked, unhurried, theatrically precise. Edith Scob is the banker's daughter caught between schemes; Francine Bergé is a former governess who wants the money for herself. Franju conceived the French-Italian co-production as a deliberate tribute to Louis Feuillade's 1916 silent serial of the same name — he kept its leisurely pacing, its intricate schemes, and its taste for shadow-drenched images.
