Mashenka

Alyosha reads poetry to Masha, invites her to the theatre, then doesn't show. She moves on. Years later, the Finnish front puts them in the same place — him in uniform, her as a nurse — and neither knows whether the gap between them can close. Raizman takes his time with that question and doesn't hand out an easy answer.

Raizman completed the film in 1942. Foreign critics singled it out as the best Soviet picture of the period — not because it celebrated the war effort, but because it didn't try to.
