Synopsis
A Time to Love and a Time to Die (1958) is Douglas Sirk's wartime melodrama, ready to watch online on iFILM. Granted leave from the crumbling Eastern Front in the spring of 1944, German soldier Ernst comes home to a town he no longer recognizes — streets reduced to rubble by Allied raids, and his parents nowhere to be found.
While searching for his family, Ernst crosses paths with Elizabeth, a doctor's daughter he knew as a child. What grows between two people who have lost nearly everything is brief, desperate love that insists on blooming amid bomb craters and curfew sirens. They are given a handful of weeks before the train carries Ernst back to a place few men return from.
The script comes from the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, who himself steps in front of the camera as Professor Pohlmann. A very young Klaus Kinski turns up in an early bit part. Sirk, the great stylist of Hollywood melodrama, made something rare for its day: a war story told through the eyes of an ordinary German soldier, stripped of heroics and heavy with the grief of watching collapse from within. A quiet, grown-up film about love squeezed into the gap between two deaths. Stream A Time to Love and a Time to Die (1958) online on iFILM.
