Cut off from the front with a handful of surviving Wehrmacht soldiers, Walter moves on foot through Polish territory where no authority holds. Directed by Florian Gallenberger, the series adapts Siegfried Lenz's long-suppressed novel of the same name: Lenz finished the manuscript in the early 1950s, then kept it locked away for over six decades before it appeared in print in 2016.
