Synopsis
The Elder Son (1975) is a Soviet drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Vitaly Melnikov from a play by Alexander Vampilov. Vampilov wrote it in 1965; theaters were slow to stage it, but the film found its audience right away.
Late on a cold spring night, two young men — Busygin and Syomyon — miss the last train home and end up stranded in an unfamiliar suburb. After a run of slammed doors, Busygin improvises at a stranger's doorbell: he tells the man who answers, a gentle, down-on-his-luck musician named Sarafanov, that he is his illegitimate son from years ago. Yevgeny Leonov plays Sarafanov as a man so disarmingly kind that the lie starts to feel like the cruelty.
What begins as a bluff quietly becomes something Busygin didn't plan for. Nikolai Karachentsov, Mikhail Boyarsky and Svetlana Kryuchkova round out the cast. Melnikov keeps the film unhurried; the real subject is not the deception but what happens when someone decides to trust you anyway.
