Synopsis
The Legend of Suram Fortress (1985) is a Georgian poetic drama directed by Sergei Parajanov, available to watch online on iFILM. The film draws on a folk tale set down by writer Daniel Chonkadze and is dedicated to Georgian soldiers across every era.
The walls of Surami fortress keep rising — and keep crumbling the moment they reach full height. A fortune teller delivers the reason: the stone will only hold if the finest young man agrees to be sealed inside it alive. One man agrees. No negotiation, no workaround — just the choice. That austerity of premise is what gives Parajanov room to work: not a story, but a ritual.
Veriko Anjaparidze, a cornerstone of Georgian cinema, heads the cast alongside Sofiko Chiaureli. Parajanov composes each frame as a living tableau — folk costumes, static staging, ornament where conventional drama would go. This was his return to filmmaking after years of forced absence, and the film carries the weight of work made in a long silence. Stream The Legend of Suram Fortress (1985) online on iFILM.
