About
Synopsis
Fernanda (2023) is an Italian historical drama directed by Maurizio Zaccaro, available to watch online on iFILM. It tells the story of Fernanda Wittgens, the art historian who became the first woman to head Milan's Pinacoteca di Brera — a post she held through occupation, bombardment and fascist pressure.
While the war ground on around her, Wittgens quietly moved priceless works out of harm's way and sheltered Jewish families facing deportation, acting on conscience rather than calculation. Matilde Gioli plays her in a film that resists dramatising the obvious: the heroism here is low-key, almost stubborn. A portrait of someone who never separated protecting art from protecting people.
