Engineer Zotov takes command of the remote 406th picket on a railway construction site deep in the taiga. The crew lives in a smoky dugout and has little use for a new foreman — the work is punishing, the conditions grim, and not everyone makes it through. Over time the brigade builds a proper house with their own hands. Zotov gets a double celebration: a housewarming and his fiancée's arrival.
