Synopsis
Burnt by the Sun (Утомлённые солнцем, 1994) is a Russian-French drama directed by Nikita Mikhalkov — watch it online on iFILM. Summer, 1936. Colonel Kotov, a decorated revolutionary hero, spends a Sunday at the family dacha with his young wife, their six-year-old daughter Nadia, and a full house of relatives and neighbors. It looks like a painting of ordinary happiness.
Then Mitya arrives from Moscow — a charming, piano-playing figure from the wife's past. Kotov recognizes him immediately. He also knows that nobody makes a social call from Moscow in the year of Stalin's Great Purge without a reason.
Mikhalkov plays Kotov himself; his actual daughter Nadezhda Mikhalkov plays Nadia on screen. Oleg Menshikov is Mitya. The film took home the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1995 and the Grand Prix at Cannes. What makes it work is restraint — the terror of the era arrives not through speeches or violence but through a single long afternoon, faces at a table, and a game that children play without knowing what it means.
