It's 1941 and actor Igor's theatre has been evacuated to Tashkent. There he meets Olga, a music teacher gravely sick with malaria; only treatment back in Moscow can save her, and wartime passes into the capital are nearly impossible to come by. So Igor marries her — a paper formality to get her home. The trouble starts when neither of them wants the divorce.
