Synopsis
The Door-to-Door Bookstore (Der Buchspazierer, 2024) is a German family drama with a soft comic touch that you can watch online on iFILM. Every day, elderly Carl walks across town on foot to deliver books to a small circle of devoted readers. He picks the right story for each one and quietly nicknames his customers after the literary characters they resemble.
Carl's clockwork routine cracks open when nine-year-old Schascha (Yuna Bennett) decides to tag along and appoint herself his assistant. She upends his habits, asks the questions he avoids, and nudges the reserved old man to admit that these readers became friends a long time ago, not just stops on a route. Then Carl loses his job, the little community starts to drift apart, and it falls to the books and to Schascha's stubbornness to pull everyone back together. Christoph Maria Herbst leads the cast.
Adapted from Carsten Henn's bestselling novel, this is a low-key film with no big crisis to manufacture — just reading, loneliness and an unlikely friendship across the generations. A good pick for an evening when you want something kind and free of cynicism. Stream The Door-to-Door Bookstore (2024) online on iFILM.
