Synopsis

And just as he learns to love again, the child's real father — local politician John Newland — turns up to claim her in court.
Martin produced the film and plays sharply against his comic image, working in quiet half-tones with barely a joke in sight. The script loosely moves George Eliot's novel Silas Marner to small-town America, with Gabriel Byrne and a very young Laura Linney beside him.
