Synopsis
The Battle of Monte Cassino (Czerwone maki, 2024) is a Polish war drama by Krzysztof Łukaszewicz that you can watch online on iFILM. Released for the 80th anniversary of the assault on the fortified hilltop abbey, the film returns to the fight that finally cracked open the Allied road to Rome in spring 1944.
We see it all through Jędrek, a boy who survived a Soviet gulag and walked out of Russia with the Polish Army among thousands of orphaned children. His parents and sister are gone; the one person he has left is his older brother Stanisław, a tank officer who treats combat as simply what a man does. Jędrek only wants to live through it. He has also fallen for Pola, a young nurse who still sees him as an unsure, unfinished boy rather than a soldier.
Ahead lies the decisive charge up a German-held ridge — hours that will rewrite hundreds of lives and tip the whole Italian campaign. The original title nods to the famous song about the poppies that grew on those Monte Cassino slopes. One for viewers after an honest, unglamorous historical drama.
