Head South

Head South (2024) is a New Zealand music drama you can watch online on iFILM. Christchurch, 1979: stuck for two weeks with his world-weary father, teenage Angus stumbles into the city's underground post-punk scene and never quite climbs back out.

One gig is all it takes. Angus decides to start a band before he can really play, pushing through self-doubt, mockery and a family tragedy along the way. His friend Kirsten keeps him upright. Between the mess at home and his first ragged rehearsals, he inches toward the moment he finally steps on stage. Ed Oxenbould takes the lead, with New Zealand singer BENEE among the cast.

The tagline says it plainly: all you need to change your world is three chords and an attitude. Director Jonathan Ogilvie shapes a warm, prickly coming-of-age story set to the guitar hum of the late '70s, rated 18+. A treat for anyone who grew up on records and still remembers their first band.
