Like Sunday, Like Rain

Like Sunday, Like Rain (2014) is a quiet music drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Frank Whaley builds the whole thing around two people: Eleanor, a musician who just lost her job, played by Leighton Meester, and a strangely grown-up boy from a wealthy New York household.

In a single bad day Eleanor loses everything — the gig, the apartment, the deadbeat boyfriend in a band, played by Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. Out of options, she signs on as summer nanny to twelve-year-old Reggie (Julian Shatkin), a cello prodigy whose mother barely registers he exists. Two lonely people, split by years and money, slowly learn to actually hear each other, often through the music itself.

There's no melodrama here and no romance. Whaley keeps a cool distance and leans on conversation, silence and the cello. Debra Messing drifts through as the absent mother.
