Synopsis
Year Nineteen (1938) drops you into besieged Astrakhan in early 1919 — Ilya Trauberg's war thriller, free to watch online on iFILM. British planes strike from above, an interventionist fleet nears by sea, and Kolchak and Denikin press in from the land.
The city is choking for want of fuel. A small group of communists slips into British-held Baku, passes itself off as oil traders, buys up fuel and runs it back across the front line. With the tanks filled at last, the Red Army's planes take to the air and the defenders swing onto the attack.
Trauberg stages this less as a parade-ground chronicle than as a near-spy operation, full of disguise, double-dealing and the constant risk of exposure. There's a Baku thread in the casting too — Atamoglan Rzayev among the players. Solid genre filmmaking from the late 1930s for anyone who enjoys old civil-war pictures.
